Had communications between those troops fighting the Japanese, and General Wainwright in Malinta Tunnel remained effective, the surrender might not have been necessary, certainly not when it did occur and perhaps at all. Such is the 'fog of war' that the failure of the Japanese to establish themselves tactically became instead a glorious and celebrated success.
