GIRUA RIVER, NEW GUINEA - The Girua River flows sluggishly north from the Owen Stanley Ranges through level plains, and then breaks into several branches which enter the sea through swamps and wetlands stretching the several miles between Buna and Sanandana Point.  The Japanese line near Buna had been, in its way, a masterpiece. It had forced the 32nd Infantry Division to attack the Japanese where they were the strongest. The 32nd and the Australian 7th Division were to attack abreast, the 32nd on the right. The boundary between the divisions was to be the Girua River, near Oro Bay. By the time this photograph was taken, the men of the 503d were more likely classified as 'tourists.'
