In June 1944, the 503d set up camp at Ebli Plantation, a large coconut plantation 15 miles inland from Humbolt Bay.  A few miles to the northwest of Ebli was Tanahmerah.  Humbolt Bay was a good harbour and thus enhanced the strategic value of the area.   Hollandia was on the west side of the bay. To the immediate south is Lake Sentani.

Whilst at Ebli, a jump on Biak was planned. It was also anticipated the 503d would make Biak its advance base. Neither occurred.
