From the time that  the withdrawal from the Philippines commenced, Brisbane began to figure firstly as the major regrouping area for US forces west of Hawaii.  It would become so critical to the South West Pacific Theater of Operations that at one point, it's population would be one-third American.   The 503d, which would be moved through Brisbane forward to Gordonvale, would consider Brisbane a place of R&R.
