Bob McGetchin
(Honorary 503d)

Guys

I am sorry to pass on that Bob McGetchin has left us. Marjean and I  spent Monday afternoon with Bob at his home. He appeared to be feeling somewhat bad, complaining of his legs, etc. His sister, Bow, called me and said she hadn't heard from him Tuesday or Wednesday and she had a fellow go to his house to check on him. He found Bob lying in bed where he had been reading. He was dead. Sorry to be the bearer of this news.

What a shock! I'm lost for words.

Bob was a stirrer, and I shall miss his constant stream of invective & comments on the military, guns, & (above all) the man v. women thing.  A little while ago he sent me a photo of a nude, big breasted blonde in sunglasses holding up two large bass, and with it the comment "If you don't hear from me for a while, you'll know I've gone fishing.  I may  never return! (Sgd) Happy Poorboy"

I'm numb and in a state of shock.  Bob was truly a very good friend and lovable character.  He was gruff, but had a heart of gold.  He loved to shock people with his e-mails, trying to get a reaction out of them. Then he would get upset when someone returned the favor.  He gave the appearance that he was tight and miserly with his money, but was always helping someone in need.  He lived a full, exciting, adventurous life.  He was a great patriot, clearly understanding the problems that confronted our county.  I felt sad for him because he had an all consuming love for a woman who wanted nothing to do with him.  She sought happiness, never realizing that it was on her door step, ringing her door bell, and asking to come in.  Now he is is gone and I will miss him greatly.

I was never too fond of School Teachers but I too will miss him in some crazy sort of way.

What a shock to wake up on Sunday Morning to the word Bob McGetchin has left our fold of Corregidor lovers. Somehow I never gave a thought to the possibility he might precede me and other old time 503rd veterans.  Bob was much younger than the rest of us. He would always be there for us. Now who is going to fill us in on what the bad guys are doing to us today?

So long Bob.  Pave the way for us.

ULISS "WHITEY" THACKER

Dear Sirs,

My name is Tracy (Thacker) Hyatt.  I live in Martinsburg WV.  My father  Uliss Thacker served with some of you fine gentleman in the 503rd.  I am sad to report to you that he passed away Oct. 18, 1992 due to his heart.

My siblings know very little about the time he spent in service for he spoke very little about it other than to tell us that he was quite a brawler. Obviously this was very difficult for him to discuss.  I know that he received several accommodations but am not sure of all of them.  He had told us that after he left the service that his mother threw out his gear that he returned home with including his uniform. We now think that he disposed of them himself because of the memories that it held were hard for him to face.

I would be most appreciative of any information you could give me.  I do believe he went by the nickname Whitey. My family is now in the process of trying to have his medals reissued for future generations to see.  Thank you so much for serving our country.

If anyone would happen to remember my dad I would love to hear from you at [email protected]

 Thank You
Tracy Hyatt

ROBERT G. CARSON

Cindy Crawford wants to locate ROBERT G. CARSON whose last known address was 315 Greer St., High Point, NC as she has  several photos of him from her  father's collection . He made the jump on Corregidor.

CAFFERY J. DUGAS

I was writing to see if anyone remembered my dad, Caffery J. Dugas from Carencro, LA. He served in the 503rd from May 23,1942 to October 28, 1945. Dad was a cook (T/4) in Service Company. I don't think he jumped on Corregidor, but he does have five pictures of the jump on the island. I think he did participate in New Guinea and the Philippines.

Dad is 81 now and doesn't remember much. My mom was interested in the reunion, but doesn't think dad is up to the trip. Dad would like to hear from anyone. Our e-mail is [email protected]

Thanks,
 Caffery J. Dugas ll

THE LITTLE RED ROADSTER

Bill Calhoun was startled to see a US convertible with a rumble seat with a  Jap at the wheel come "roaring" past F Company's position at the last set of senior officers quarters.   D Battery's fifty caliber machine gun took it under fire and halted it abruptly.

This red roadster (pictured) was owned by Harry J. Harrison (USMA Class of 35), and he sold it to a junior officer when he left Corregidor. Here it is pictured on Harrison's honeymoon at Baguio. Comments are invited.

BOB WEBER

My father is Robert (Bob) Weber, and he jumped on Corregidor on February 16th, 1945. He served briefly in A Company, then was in F Company and Service Company. He now lives in Hesperia, Ca., and would love to hear from any and all who served with him. He does not have a computer, but I will be glad to forward any messages to him. We, his children and grandchildren, would also like to hear any stories any of you have to tell. Thank you for this fascinating site. I've printed some of it and sent it along to Dad, and he was really happy to get it. I look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers my dad.

Donna (Weber) Murphy

Great site,

Greetings from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 503rd Infantry. We inherited your lineage and were born again for Vietnam. The 173rd/503rd was deactivated 1972 and remained dormant for 28yrs. On July 12 2000, the infamous 173rd Airborne Brigade was reactivated in Vinceza, Italy as the 508th Infantry.  Best to you all !

09 APRIL 00

My father, Bob "Doc" Snyder, was in F Co., 503d RCT as a rifleman. We're getting him a computer and hope to get him hooked up soon.  He's still living in Winston-Salem, NC, but his squad is getting small.  Among others, he's lost Carl "Mean" Ballard, his squad leader, and A.T. Field, his Asst. Squad Leader / 1st SGT over the last few years.  Both good men and much missed.

Dad didn't make it to Corregidor in '95, but I hope he goes back soon, especially to Negros. The proudest thing that I can say is that I'm his son. I also feel very lucky to have graduated from West Point exactly 50 yrs after BG Jones. In fact, I saw him a few weeks before my graduation while he was at his 50th reunion there in the Spring of 1985.   He was quite a man.  All of you are quite a group of men.

The thing that has impressed me the most over the years at all the reunions I've gone to is that the 3000 Thieves are actually very much gentlemen.

Respectfully,
Karson Snyder
