Of great strategic value to Manila is a steam power generating plant situated at the eastern end of the small island in the Pasig River known as the Isla del Provisor. Its five large buildings and many smaller shed-like structures covered almost every foot of the island. In an attempt to preserve the power plant, the eastern part of the island will not be subject of artillery and mortar preparation for the initial attack, 10 February. The close combat shall cost the 129th Regiment ( 37th Division) dearly - 35 killed, 240 wounded and 10 missing and a Medal of Honor shall be won there. But it will also mark the necessity for a drastic revision of tactical doctrine, and the western part of the island will be blasted by artillery, mortars and tanks in preparation for the final attack on 11 February.
