Between February 14 and 16th, the 37th Division and the 1st Cavalry cleared the Japanese from Pasay, fighting fierce battles around Harrison Park and Rizal Stadium. In the following week, the 1st Cavalry encountered bitter opposition as it fought its way up Dewey Boulevard along the bay, overcoming die-hard Japanese defenders in battles for such landmarks as the Army-Navy Club, the Manila Hotel, the Philippine General Hospital, and the University of the Philippines.
At the same time, the infantry of the 37th Division, on the cavalrymen's right flank, gradually cleared out Japanese strong points at the New Police Station, City Hall, and the General Post Office to the east of Intramuros. By February 22 Iwabuchi's surviving defenders had been driven into the northwest corner of south Manila - Intramuros, the south port area, and the Commonwealth government buildings near the Walled City.
