Douglas MacArthur was more than a residential guest at the Manila Hotel.  He was a stockholder in the Manila Hotel Company, and thereafter a member of its board of directors, its treasurer and vice president. The extent of his investment in it is still not known. Through it, and through his membership of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, of which he attained 32d rank as "Knight Commander of the Court of Honor", he became closely associated with the leading members of Manila's professional and business communities.
