TEACHING THE AUSTRALIANS ABOUT FOOTBALL -
Gridiron
puzzled the Aussies as much as their versions of football did us.
A series beginning with 'The History of American Football' appeared
in the Cairns Post on 3 August 1943, continuing with other pieces
explaining the rules, before a match between GI teams from Cairns
and Gordonvale, the latter consisting of 503d PIR members. It ended
in a scoreless draw before a large crowd (for Cairns) said to be
8,000. Unfortunately, when it came to the Nadzab jump, there
was at least one claim by R for a medical exemption due to bad
knees. "Doc" Bradford was not impressed - he had little use
for scoundrels and malingerers. |
