The ram gang loads the
shell, whilst a separate powder crew stands by to go to the rear of
the breech after the shell has been rammed home into the forcing
cone. Unlike the 12-inch BCLR (Barbette Carriage Long Range) guns of
Batteries Smith and Hearn, there is insufficient space to maneuver
both shell and powder
At the rear of the
ram, there is insufficient room to push, so they are facing the rear
and utilizing a reverse pull motion.
Guns of this size
can be fired manually (by lanyard) or by an electrical firing
switch. The live wire can be easily seen along the gun's side
running to the breech's electrical firing mechanism. .
