A 155mm GPF GUN ON A 360 DEGREE PANAMA MOUNT - BTRY LEVAGOOD.

GPF is not named for General Purpose Field - it's origin is Grand Puissance Filloux. Originally used by the French Army, it was manufactured under licence in the USA from 1917, after the US switched to metric artillery based on French patterns. It was the primary heavy artillery gun under the designation 155 mm Gun M1917 or M1918 until 1942, when it was gradually replaced by the 155 mm M1A1 'Long Tom'.

Levagood was named only during the war, and previously it had been unnamed. It overlooked Kindley Field.
