There have, in fact, been three George Ruhlen 's
prominent in the U.S. Military. George Ruhlen Sr., had been an army
inspector general in earlier times. George Ruhlen Jr. was Commanding
Officer of Corregidor in 1938, when these photographs were taken.
He retired in 1944
and spent several years as President of the San Diego Historical
Society during the late 1940's and early 1950's.
Ruhlen's
son, the third George Ruhlen,
served in the ETO and, as a Lt. Col., commanded the 3d Armored Field
Artillery Battalion which was an element of the 9th Armored
Division. The unit took a key part in stopping German advances
in the Battle of the Bulge at Medernach. He
retired from the U.S. Army
with the rank of major general and died
in 2003. |
