Despite its prominent
visibility from Bataan, the Corregidor Post Hospital was not
specially targeted by the Japanese artillery. Indeed there are
suggestions (unverified) that it was not accorded target status, and
was hit only incidentally. It took no role during the siege, all
patients and medical personnel having been transferred
already to the 1000 bed capacity Malinta Tunnel Hospital.
The destruction of
the Hospital that one sees on Corregidor was accomplished largely by
scrappers who had access to Corregidor by dubious arrangements with
the military authorities. Thereafter, the elements and
military training on the island hastened the building's demise.
