All available Headquarters Company personnel were
set to work under the energetic leadership of their "top-kick" Sergeant. He
turned himself into a chore boy for a time, then a stretcher-bearer, then he
became a ward attendant, and again mopped up floors. Between jobs, and all the
while, he kept encouraging and driving the other men under him. Human inertia
offers a dead weight to be met and overcome, even in a crisis. Here, as
everywhere else, there was but one man who would lift and hustle, and push, and
lead, for every twenty men who did no more than they were prodded into doing.
But somehow the job got done, and in surprisingly short time. By mid-afternoon
approximately 250-300 men had been brought into the hospital. The doctors
checked their dressings; the trained medical aid men gave them what care and
comfort they could; the worst cases received plasma or splints or emergency
treatment; traction was improvised for the very bad fractures. A dressing
station or treatment room was also in operation; and the surgical instruments
brought in on the jump were laid out. Their use, however, was limited by the
fact that no water was available. Care, therefore, consisted only of the
simplest measures, and in what relief from pain could be given by liberal use of
morphia, combined with barbiturate drugs.
