Madigan was replaced as C.O. of the 462d PFABn by Major Arlis Kline , when Madigan was wounded when an artillery shell exploded in a tree above a position from where he was being a forward observer.  It was 'friendly fire',  and led Maj. Kline to comment years later that "we managed to arrange a new C.O. by having the old one shot." The 462d PFABn was inactivated at Camp Anza, California on 21 December 1945.
