Lt. Col. Kinsler assumed command ex Lt. Col. Sink on 29 June 1942.  The unit503d PIR jumped 5 September 1943. By 22 October, Kinsler, under severe criticism from within the 503d concerning his conduct of the campaign, had taken his own life, and Lt. Col. Jones assumed command.
