On 25
July 1942, all POW's remaining on the island (approx
316, under the command of Lt. Col. Lewis S. Kirkpatrick)
were moved to the Hospital. The men were placed on work
details scavenging scrap metal, weapons, and ammunition.
The prisoners suffered no significant abuse, nor
shortage of food.
