COMMENTARY
NOTES CONCERNING HUDSON HILL'S MAP B
DETAIL OF BATTERY WHEELER AREA
Hill has a
preoccupation with there being a connection between one of the
tunnels near the South Shore Road, and Wheeler Battery. There
was such a tunnel, but it was nowhere near the South Shore
Road, or accessible from it. Its entrance was only a short
distance below the cliff edge, approximately three hundred feet
of sheer cliff above the road level. Hill's drawing does,
though, well illustrate how time and again a group of Japanese
defenders could survive most offensive fire direct into a tunnel
mouth, necessitating more direct approaches.
